As the chairman and CEO of Barings LLC, Thomas (“Tom”) Finke oversees the management of over $271 billion in global assets. A co-founder of First Union Institutional Debt Management (IDM), he joined Barings when it acquired IDM from Wachovia Corporation. When away from work, Thomas Finke focuses on spending as much time as possible with his family. Time with family has been linked with strengthening the emotional bonds that link its members together. Engaging in leisure activities, which can be as simple as watching television or playing board games, with family members can create a more cohesive family unit. The benefits are particularly apparent in adolescents, who many see as being most at risk of engaging in delinquent behavior. A 2012 report published by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, a nonprofit with a focus on researching and understanding substance abuse issues, found that teenagers who eat meals with their families between five and seven times per week are far less susceptible to using alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco than those who eat dinner with their families only once or twice a week. The report highlights not only the importance of spending time with the family, but also how this time does not necessarily need to be dedicated to expensive or novel activities.
